New ISO Standard (ISO 22359) is Developed for Civil Defence Shelters

Historically, there was no single harmonized standard for civil defence, and most countries had its own standard or norms designed to meet specific requirements based on local unique conditions like regional threats, construction norms, geographic and environmental conditions and more.
Currently the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is working to standardize this sector and soon the first standard to be issued by ISO in the field of civil defence shelters - ISO 22359 Security and Resilience - Hardened Protective Shelters.
Important to emphasize that ISO 22359 will include a set of guidelines which will contain recommendations for hardened protective structures regarding their planning, construction, operation and maintenance.
The proposed standard is not a management system standard, but rather a guidance standard that complements existing management system standards and provides guidance for those implementing such standards in the field of civil protection with enhanced protective shelters. As a guideline, this International Standard is not intended to be used for certification purposes.
The standard purpose to be a guide for any activity or operation related to civil defence shelters and to offer assistance to organizations in their efforts to protect people and assets from man-made disasters or caused by natural conditions.
The proposed standard is intended for use by organizations or individuals responsible for or involved in the decision-making, planning, implementation, administration, use or maintenance of secure shelters, such as local, regional and national authorities; civil defense bodies; first responders; and businesses such as designers, constructors and equipment suppliers.
ISO 22359 covers the design, construction, operation and maintenance of reinforced protective shelters. It defines the terms used in this document and defines the parts, characteristics, equipment, activities and responsibilities associated with each phase of the shelter life cycle.
The new standard does not cover the minimum requirements or precise specifications for any property or action related to storage or sheltering, as these are usually specified in national laws and regulations of each country.
